SIT files FIR against educational institutes in Multi-Crore Scholarship Scam

Dehradun: The Uttarakhand high court (HC) monitored Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing the multi-crore scholarship scam, has filed FIRs against several educational institutions which siphoned off scholarship money meant for reserved category students.

After completing preliminary investigation, the SIT led by inspector general of police (IG) Sanjay Gunjyal registered case against staff of the educational institutions and bank officials for allegedly conniving to siphon off scholarship money.

Gunjyal said, “On Friday, we have filed FIRs in separate cases in Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar districts. On the basis of preliminary inquiry, we can say that scholarship money meant for SC/ST and OBC students were taken from social welfare department against fake list of students.”

A case has been registered against Santosh Private Industrial Training Institute (ITI), situated in UP’s Saharanpur district, for allegedly siphoning off Rs 7,84,700 from Nainital district social welfare office in the name of 19 reserved students.

However, during SIT team’s physical verification, it was found that the ITI took Rs 36,000 per student from social welfare department, while the students, whose names were found in the scholarship list, never studied in the institute.

Gunjyal added, “They managed to do the cheating in connivance with officials of the bank where the money was transferred by the social welfare department.”

The former principal of the ITI and the bank officials have been booked under section 420 (cheating), 466 (forgery), 467 (forgery a document), 471 (using forged document as genuine) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Similarly, middlemen in connivance with educational institutions siphoned off scholarship money in Jaspur and Bajpur areas of US Nagar district. SIT also found out that in some cases general category students were shown as reserved category students by forging documents to get scholarship money in the district. Earlier on Thursday, SIT had filed FIRs in separate cases in Tehri, Nainital and US Nagar districts.
