AICTE launched a unique course on Universal Human Values

While speaking about the initiatives taken by AICTE during the lockdown period, Prof. Sahasrabudhe informed that AICTE is orienting academic fraternity towards inculcation of Universal Human Values (UHV) in Technical Education.

AICTE has introduced a three-week induction program for all freshmen students from 2017 with one faculty associated with every 20-25 students. This step is taken to build a strong connect between students and the faculty on one hand and create holistic awareness about Universal Human Values. One of the objectives of the three-week induction programme is to engage students in different art forms like painting, singing, dance, drama, pottery, yoga, meditation, etc. It also aims to channelize the ecstatic energy of the students into several productive activities like sports, cultural programmes. Inspirational lectures by eminent personalities, visits to nearby historical places and industry, village life, discussions and film screenings etc. are also a part of this programme. A faculty member trained in Universal Human Values programme, helps students in the right development of their world-view, mindset, perspective and values.

The Student Induction Program (SIP) based on UHV-I and UHV-II course in AICTE’s Model Curriculum can provide an orientation to students for such a holistic education. Colleges are required to develop the requisite teaching capacity for both. As indicated in the Approval Process Handbook 2020-21, each college must prepare at least 1 UHV faculty for every 20 newly joined students. Faculty must be prepared from every department/ branch/ discipline over the next three years. AICTE has so far trained more than 17,000 faculty members.

During the lockdown period, an Orientation workshop on “Vision for Education and the role of Universal Human Values” was organised for decision makers from 2-6 April, 2020. Around 60 Officials, Vice Chancellors, Principals/ Directors attended the programme.

Another web based workshop on “Incorporating Universal Human Values in Technical Education” is ongoing for Vice Chancellors and University coordinators regarding SIP. More than 200 academicians are attending the programme.

Prof. Rajive Kumar, Member Secretary AICTE informed that a Student Induction Cell has been established in AICTE. Student Induction Cell, AICTE is working with National Coordination Committee for Induction Programme (NCC-IP) for organising Faculty Development Programme on SIP & UHV. He said that due to overwhelming response of faculty members during the lockdown period, two more such programmes, accommodating around 500-600 faculty members will be organised before 20th April, 2020.
