JEE or GATE not necessary for students to taste IIT on campus culture

Gandhinagar : Studying in an IIT is a dream for thousands of students, but only a few are able to make it due to tough competition and limited seats. To host non-IITian students on the campus and give them a taste of the IIT culture, Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) has been offering the non-degree programme. The programme is open at various levels for students of Engineering, Sociology, Development studies and more.

Through the programme, students can pursue part-time or full-time courses and spend an entire semester at IITGN for credit or to conduct research, undertake projects with the faculty and participate in internships at the Institute. “The main objective is to give a chance to the deserving students to be introduced to the IIT systems, which is otherwise not possible for a large number of students owing to the cut-throat competition in entrance examinations. Hence, the students are no longer restricted to qualifying JEE or GATE to learn from the culture of an IIT,” says Sudhir K Jain, director, IITGN.

Jain says that it will help in changing the entire notion of IITs being ‘exclusive’ to moving towards ‘inclusivity and transparency’. “It is better than online programmes where there is no direct interaction between the faculty and students. The programme helps the students learn without hampering their regular degree as the colleges give them some credit for the courses done at IITGN,” he adds. Students pay the fees for an entire semester at IITGN and attend regular classes.

A certificate of completion is also provided to the students at the end of the semester. Admissions are open for both Semester-I (August-November) and Semester-II (January-April) for all the courses.

Students registered for a degree in a recognised institute in India or abroad, have completed at least one year of college education, and sponsored by that institute to complete the academic requirements at IITGN, can apply for admission as full-time non-degree students. Students, engineers or scientists of other institutes, industries or research labs can apply as part-time, non-degree students while pursuing other opportunities.
