The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) have informed the Supreme Court that the Board exams for remaining papers that were scheduled from July 1 stand cancelled.
A Bench headed by Justice A M Khanwilkar was apprised by the Solicitor General Tushar Mehta that a scheme has been formulated to assess the performance of Class XII students on the basis of their performance in last examinations.
The Solicitor General for the CBSE told the Supreme Court that Delhi, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu have conveyed inability to conduct examinations. The CBSE Class X students will be assessed on basis of performance in last three exams, the Board told the SC.
The CBSE told Supreme Court that the exams scheduled from July 1 to July 15 stand cancelled. The CBSE said the re-exam would be conducted when the situation becomes conducive and the option to take up the re-exam would not be available to class X examinees.
The results may be declared in mid-August, the CBSE said on being asked by the court to clarify as to when the academic year will begin after the declaration of results.
The Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) however told the bench, which also comprised Justices Dinesh Maheshwari and Sanjiv Khanna, that it will not be giving re-examination option to students of Class X and XII and the results would be declared on the basis of past performances.
The Supreme Court asked the CBSE if it will give students the option to appear for the exams later or will declare result on the basis of internal assessment marks.
The CBSE replied that the option to appear for exams later will be given to Class XII students. Class X exams, which were to be held only for North-East Delhi students, are cancelled. CBSE will hold Class XII exams as soon as the conditions are conducive for students who opt to appear for the exams.
However, the SC takes note of CBSE’s submission and has asked the CBSE to issue fresh notification clarifying details of Class XII Board exams.
